Ruud Toonen has studied the function of STXBP1/Munc18-1 for the past 20 years. We have described mechanisms that target STXBP1 to synapses, identified STXBP1 as essential protein for synaptic transmission and discovered several pathways that neurons use to modify the efficiency with which STXBP1 supports synaptic transmission.
