Prof.dr. Sabine Spijker obtained a MSc in Molecular Neurobiology in 1994 and a PhD in Neuroscience at the VU University Amsterdam in 1999. She received post-doctoral training at the IGBMC in Strasbourg (EMBO long-term fellowship, Marie Curie), and at the VU University Amsterdam.

She was awarded a Vici grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) in 2015 to expand on her research into the molecular basis of the maintained state of depression.

Apart from contributions to several courses (BSc and MSc level), as well as guest lectures at other institutions, she is course coordinator and teacher in the Human Development course of P4 in year 1 of the Biomedical Science curriculum.

Her current positions are:

Full professor, initiated by the Fenna Diemer Lindeboom program (since 2012)
Program leader of the Amsterdam Neuroscience program ‘Mood, Anxiety and Psychosis’ (since 2014)
• Member of the Animal Welfare committee (since 2006)
• Editor-in-Chief of Amsterdam Science, a magazine for outreach of our research (since 2014)
